Granville's Schieber, Wigal among Central District first-team honorees
COLUMBUS — The duo of Cate Schieber and Ella Wigal helped the Granville girls basketball team run roughshod over the Central District in Division II, and they were honored Monday for leading the Blue Aces to a repeat championship.
Schieber and Wigal were named to the first team by Central District members of the Ohio Preps Sportswriters Association. Granville plays Kettering Alter in the Division II regional semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Springfield.
Schieber is averaging 12.3 points and 4.7 steals per game. Wigal is averaging 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Licking Valley senior Kylee White was named to the second team in Division II. Granville sophomore Harper Annarino, Lakewood senior Camryn Martindale, Heath junior Taliyah Holmes and Utica freshman Abby Dickson were named to the honorable mention list.
Newark senior Maddie Vejsicky was named to the first team in Division I. Vejsicky averaged 12.6 points per game and shot nearly 40% from 3-point range for the district runner-up Wildcats.
Watkins Memorial senior Alexia Gartner was named to the second team, Newark senior Gwen Stare to the third team and Newark junior Jenna Shackleford, Watkins senior Alyssa Haynes and junior Kalleigh Rennie and Licking Heights senior Kasheenah Lovinsky to the honorable mention list.
Johnstown sophomore Abigail Adkins was named to the first team in Division III. Adkins averaged 16 points and 2.5 assists per game, leading the Johnnies to a district runner-up finish.
Johnstown senior Brooke Barb was named to the third team and Northridge junior Darla Dorman to the honorable mention list.
Newark Catholic senior Chloe Chard-Peloquin was named to the first team in Division IV. Chard-Peloquin averaged 13.6 points and 10 rebounds per game, leading the Green Wave to a district runner-up finish.
Granville Christian senior Hannah Hubbard was named to the second team, NC sophomore Kylie Gibson and GCA senior Darynne Zellar to the third team and NC senior Brooklyn Smith, GCA sophomore Ella Rhoads and Liberty Christian sophomore Shelby Carr to the honorable mention list.
Newark junior Grant Burkholder was named to the boys Division I second team. Burkholder is averaging 15.8 points and 2.4 assists per game for Wildcats, who have reached the district semifinals.
Newark senior Ethan Schell and junior Steele Meister and Licking Heights senior Dante Collier were named to the honorable mention list.
Heath senior Brandon McLaughlin was named to the Division II first team. McLaughlin is averaging 16.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs, who have reached the district semifinals.
Heath senior Keylan Williams and Granville sophomore Dante Varrasso were named to the third team. Heath senior Reece Huber, Granville junior Rex Rader and Valley senior Colby Stough were named to the honorable mention list.
Utica junior Trenton Collins was named to the second team in Division III. Johnstown junior Cody Siegfried was named to the third team and Utica senior Seth Cooper and Northridge senior Nic Minder and juniors Ian Travis and Justin Townley to the honorable mention list.
Newark Catholic senior Cole Canter and Granville Christian senior Joe Benvie each were named to the first team in Division IV. Canter is averaging 16.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the Green Wave, who have reached the district semifinals, and Benvie averaged 20 points and 3.8 steals per game for the Lions.
NC senior Brandon Buchanan and Liberty Christian junior Josh Onabanjo were named to the second team and GCA senior Brendon Austin and Liberty Christian junior Evan Adair to the honorable mention list.
