Danny Claypool used a “perfectly placed” header to get the Grandview Heights boys soccer team rolling toward its second consecutive Division III state championship.

The senior midfielder/forward deflected a pass from Leo Marcellana into the goal only 4 minutes, 15 seconds into the game, giving the Bobcats the early lead in a 3-0 victory over Toledo Ottawa Hills on Nov. 12 at Lower.com Field.

“It was a header, kinda, perfectly placed,” Claypool said. “I was kinda lucky. I had a lot of those opportunities during the season, and none of them went in. Of course it goes in during the state championship.

“That (early goal) took some of the pressure off. (Being ahead) 1-0 is a big difference. It kind of takes the soul out of the other team, and it gives you more opportunities when you’re winning.”

The Bobcats played at Ottawa Hills in their regular-season finale Oct. 15, losing 2-1 to the Green Bears.

“The (regular-season) game against Ottawa Hills was symptomatic of the entire season,” said Grandview coach James Gerdes, whose team finished 15-7-1. “We had lapses in concentration that let us down. Going up to Toledo was tough, and we had some injuries and some of the players were sick. Being close to home (for the state final) made a big difference.

“When the postseason started, there was an agreement that this was effectively a new season. We used everything that happened to us in the regular season and learned from that and made us a better team. As we have historically, we just got stronger and stronger as the season went on.”

Claypool also scored with 10:57 left in the first half off a pass from Graham Nelson, and Jayden Brown had an unassisted goal with 33:00 to play in the contest.

“We came in playing really well but didn’t get the bounces today and didn’t make the adjustments on time,” said Ottawa Hills coach Brian Hanudel, whose team finished 18-5-1. “They are state champs for a reason, and we knew we had to knock off the returning state champs.”

Grandview goalie Beck Bockbrader had two saves, and Julian Jaume had five saves for Ottawa Hills.

The Bobcats had six shots on goal in each half. The Green Bears were limited to seven shots on goal, including four in the first half.

“We were focused and motivated (defensively),” said Grandview's Will DeVere, who moved from forward to defender seven games into the season to shore up the back. “I was really impressed with our two sophomore outside backs, Teddy (Murphy) and Mateo (Holliman). It was impressive to see sophomores play like that.”
