Grand Canyon's men's basketball team improved to 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference after its game Saturday at Lamar was called off because Lamar was unable to play.

Because it was not just COVID-19 issues that hit Lamar, GCU was awarded a forfeit win but it won't count in the NET rankings. The same thing happened for New Mexico State on Thursday. Lamar wasn't able to play the Aggies, either, so they were given a WAC forfeit win.

GCU arrived in Texas just hours before its Thursday night game in Edinburg, held an impromptu shoot-around at the hotel parking lot, before going out and shooting 58% in its 84-70 win over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Forward Gabe McGlothan scored a GCU career-high 18 points and made a college career-best four 3-pointers. Guard Holland Woods II, who missed last week's home game after being in health and safety protocols, had 17 points and seven assists in 38 minutes, taking over the point guard duties with Jovan Blacksher Jr., on the bench much of the second half with four fouls.

The forfeit win doesn't count in overall record but it counts in the WAC standings. The 12-2 overall record matches the best start as a Division I school for the Antelopes, who next play at home Thursday night against Abilene Christian in a battle of 2021 NCAA Tournament teams.

GCU's Jan. 15 home game against Tarleton will be the first time ESPNU broadcasts a game from GCU Arena.
