YOUR GOOD NEWS: LPD holds volunteer appreciation dinner

LPD honors volunteers

The Lakeland Police Department Volunteers Appreciation Dinner and award presentation was held April 12 at the Lake Mirror Complex in Lakeland. Awards for service were given to the following: Britt Franklin, Chaplain of the Year; Julian Vargas, Explorer of the Year; Jet’s Pizza, Business Partner of the Year; Shawntrese Starks, PAL Volunteer of the Year; Tonya Rogers, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator of the Year; Veronica Roundtree, LPD Overall Volunteer of the Year. More than 150 citizens attended including Lakeland Commissioner Phillip Walker; Lakeland Police Assistant Chief Sam Taylor; chairman of the Lakeland Police Citizens Advisory Board Shandale Terrell; and Lakeland Police Citizens Advisory Board member James Ring.

Lake Wales JROTC Cadets

Junior Reserve Officer Training Cadets from Lake Wales High School received awards at their annual ceremony April 25. The JROTC program is led by Senior Army Instructor Capt. Charles D. Simpson Jr. and Assistant Army Instructor MSG Ralph Stout. Medals and ribbons were given by local service organizations as well as by Simpson. Karen Wolzanski, a member of several hereditary societies and chairman of the National Defense Committee, Lake Wales Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, presented several awards for excellence in academic and military studies. Wolzanski presented Claudia Perez with the NSDAR award and Jackson Wunker with a certificate for Top Shot on the Rifle Team. Both cadets also received a cash award from the chapter. Other medals presented by Wolzanski were Daughters of 1812 to Alisha Bonds and Descendants of Founders and Patriots to Kirsten Stephens. John Hillery, from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Lakeland Chapter #535, presented an award to Cadet Cassidy Mathews. Robert Peppel of the Lakeland Chapter Sons of the American Revolution awarded Bryan Escalante-Fuentes a medal and certificate. Jackson Wunker received a Certificate of Achievement award from SFC Williams and SSG Barahona of the U.S. Army. Representatives of other organizations were not present and their awards were presented to the cadets by Simpson. The Special Forces Award went to Cadet Timothy Pierstorff while the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry award went to Cadet Maximus Koloc. The Military Officers Association Award was presented to Sawyer Sego, Claudia Perez, Trevor Harris and Stella Hogan. The last award was the Superior Cadet Award going to Stella Hogan, Reagan Bolden, Kirsten Stephens, Bonnie Burgoyne and Claudia Perez. Simpson presented ribbons for excellence in academics, sports and participation in JROTC Color Guard and Rifle Team.
