Girls basketball highlights, opening night: Erie County teams post big wins

Freshman Brooke Przybylski had a big start to her high school career with 26 points to lead Harbor Creek to a 49-34 win over North East in the Harbor Creek tournament as the PIAA basketball season opened Friday with a flurry of tip-off tourney action.

Przybylski sank 10 field goals, including three 3-pointers, on her way to the big debut. Samantha Zank had nine points and Rylee Kapsar added seven.

Alex Cozzens, who had a breakout freshman season last winter, led North East with 13 points.

Union City 64, Commodore Perry 12: At Meadville, the Bears dominated on defense to earn a first-round win in the Meadville tournament on Friday as Union City raced to a 23-2 lead in the first quarter.

Jessica Messenger led the Bears with 22 points followed by Cathryn Reynolds with 14 and Abby Tingley had 10.

Corry 36, Saegertown 32: At Albion, the Beavers outscored the Panthers 11-5 in the fourth quarter to earn a first-round win on Friday in the Northwestern tournament.

Saegertown led 27-25 after three quarters before a big fourth quarter by Corry. Skylar Riedel led the Beavers with 10 points and Rachel Brady had nine.

Erie 53, Chautauqua Lake (N.Y.) 26: At Waterford, the Royals scored 33 points in the the first half to pull away in the Fort LeBoeuf tournament.

Erie will take on the Bison for the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Torreuna Roberts led the Royals with 12 points and Arianna Mitchell had nine.

Fairview 47, General McLane 30: At Harbor Creek, Hope Garrity scored 20 points in the Tigers' win over the Lancers to open the Harbor Creek tournament on Friday.

Ella Garrity added 10 points for Fairview. Holly Shreve led McLane with six.

McDowell 51, Ambridge 13: At Harmony, the Trojans had three players in double digits in a win Friday at the Seneca Valley tournament.

The Trojans didn't allow more than four points in a quarter in a solid win. Sophomore Caylen Spano had 13 points and Jessica Hetz and Amaiya Nelson each had 10.

Fort LeBoeuf 40, Hickory 31: At Waterford, the Bison built a 20-4 lead at the half and hung on to beat the Hornets in the Fort LeBoeuf tournament Friday.

Chloe Rossi had 16 points for LeBoeuf and Emily Samluk scored eight. McKenzie Gustas, who was part of the Hickory girls golf state championship team, led the Hornets with 13 points.

Northwestern 49, Reynolds 43: At Albion, Chloe Yazembiak scored 18 points as the Wildcats gave head coach Steven Sawin his first win on Friday in the Northwestern tournament.

The Wildcats led 30-18 at the half and 41-26 after three quarters. Nicole Rimel added 11 points and Rylee Schwartz had nine for Northwestern. Halle Murcko had 18 points and Lawrynn Harrold added 14 for the Raiders.

Villa Maria 72, Bishop Kearney (N.Y.) 54: At HFEC, the Victors had several underclassmen lead the way on Friday in a win in the Border Battle.

Villa Maria sophomore Jayden McBride scored 22 points and freshman Addie Biel added 14. Carissa Dunham added 16 points for the Victors.

Seneca 51, Meadville 19: At Meadville, the Bobcats' defense held down the Bulldogs in a win Friday in the Meadville tournament.

Julia Patterson led the Bobcats with 16 points followed by Lauren Konkol with 11 and Khyli Peterson added 10. Phoebe Templin led Meadville with nine points.
