Patient dies following muscular dystrophy gene therapy, Sarepta reports
Sarepta Therapeutics said Tuesday that a patient died while taking its closely watched gene therapy for muscular dystrophy, sending company shares plummeting in morning trading. The young man died of acute liver injury, a known side effect, Sarepta said in a statement. It’s the first known patient death with the therapy, which has been used in more than 800 patients, the company said.

The European Union's law enforcement agency cautioned Tuesday that artificial intelligence is turbocharging organized crime that is eroding the foundations of societies across the 27-nation bloc as it becomes intertwined with state-sponsored destabilization campaigns. The grim warning came at the launch of the latest edition of a report on organized crime published every four years by Europol that is compiled using data from police across the EU and will help shape law enforcement policy in the bloc in coming years. “Some attacks show a combination of motives of profit and destabilization, as they are increasingly state-aligned and ideologically motivated,” she added.

Brian Kemp's priority bill to limit lawsuits and large jury verdicts has gotten increasing pushback after an initial boost in support as the legislative session enters its final weeks. Crowds of business owners and doctors swarmed the Capitol to back Kemp when he announced the proposal, also called tort reform. “There are two Republicans that are trial lawyers, but I've heard a more broad group of people express concerns with the bill as currently written," said Rep. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Tuesday the Trump administration is seeking help from companies and foreign governments to prevent China from getting U.S. chips, and reiterated his belief Chinese AI company DeepSeek improperly used American chips. "People took our chips and redirected them to China for money," Lutnick said at a Bureau of Industry and Security conference. Lutnick added that the Trump administration plans to try to bring export controls into trade deals "so that countries decide are they aligned with America and freedom and liberty and the Western way of life, or are they so hooked to making a little more money or buying something a little more cheaply that they would sell their soul, because that's what you're doing, you'd be selling your soul to those who seek us harm."

The parents of a U.S. college student who vanished almost two weeks ago in the resort town of Punta Cana have asked authorities to declare her legally dead. In a letter to Dominican police dated Monday, Subbarayudu and Sreedevi Konanki state that after an extensive search, local authorities believe that Sudiksha, a 20-year-old student at the University of Pittsburgh, drowned. A police official not authorized to speak about the case confirmed Tuesday that authorities received the letter.
