Gate to Gate run is back at Eglin Air Force Base
The Eglin Gate to Gate Memorial Day Run returned to the base Monday after a two-year hiatus because of COVID restrictions. About 800 runners and walkers turned out for event, which is now in its 35th year.
Mist hung on the ground as runners took off from the corner of Chinquapin Drive and Eglin Boulevard and followed a 4.4-mile course that wound around the eastern side of the base.
Many participants carried red carnations and stopped along the route at Eglin’s
All-Wars Memorial to place the carnations on a memorial, while volunteer Bill Fletcher played the bagpipes.
Following the race, there was an after-run party at Eglin’s Unity Park with free food and refreshments, as well as award presentations for top finishers in a variety of age categories.
The overall top finisher was Joe Niemiec, with a time of a little over 22 minutes.
