An REI membership means huge savings for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re into hiking, skiing, biking, or just being outside, REI carries the best quality gear for almost any activity.

Members get perks like free shipping and exclusive discounts. And for a limited time, you can get a $30 bonus card for a future purchase when you sign up for the lifetime membership (which costs $30), effectively making the lifetime membership free.

How To Get an REI Membership for Free

To get the $30 bonus card, you have to complete two steps:

  1. Make a $50 purchase before September 29, 2022

  2. Add a lifetime membership to your cart (this costs $30 upfront) or during checkout at an REI store

After that, you are emailed a $30 bonus card to use towards a future purchase at REI or given the card immediately at the store (while supplies last). If you’re planning to make another REI purchase anyways — online, in-store, or over the phone — the bonus card effectively cancels out the membership cost. So you get a lifetime of perks, essentially for free.

If you’re debating whether this deal is worth it, consider how much you spend on outdoor gear, rentals, and park passes every year. If vibing out with nature sounds like the perfect weekend getaway for you, then an REI membership will likely save you money.

10% Back on Eligible Purchases

If you regularly buy gear or athleticwear, this perk alone is worth the cost of the membership. Your Co-op Member Reward on eligible full-priced purchases accumulates during the year, and you get a notice of your reward amount every March that’s typically worth 10% back.

Free Shipping

Members get free shipping with no minimum purchase. If you frequently shop online at REI for outdoor gear, it saves you from needing to load up your cart to meet the non-member $50 minimum or from paying a shipping fee.

Year-Round ‘Garage Sale’ Gear and Trade In Your Own Gear

REI used to be famous for its member “Garage Sale” events, where members could purchase lightly used items at a significant discount.

With changes to its garage sale approach, REI members now have access to a year-round online store and in-store used items, too, at select locations. Members can also trade in old gear and buy pre-loved gear anytime.

20% off REI’s Full-Service Repairs Shop + Free Services

If you’re into biking, skiing, or snowboarding, then you’ll get 20% off labor costs at REI’s full-service shop. You also get free flat tire repairs for bikes and free waxes for skis or boards.

Discounts on REI Classes and National Park Passes

Members get automatic discounts on REI classes. If you’re looking to get into climbing, mountaineering, or even wilderness medicine, you will save money. Classes are heavily discounted and sometimes free for members.

You can even browse classes by these categories:

  • Camping & Hiking

  • Climbing

  • Cycling

  • Fitness

  • Outdoor Skills

  • Snowsports

  • Stewardship

  • Travel

  • Watersports

REI also sells America the Beautiful passes ($79.99/year), which covers park admission to over 2,000 federal recreation sites for a full year. While the pass price is not discounted to REI members, REI will donate 10% of pass proceeds to the National Forest Foundation, National Park Foundation and the U.S. Endowment for Forestry & Communities, so you can feel good about purchasing the pass from their site.

Also, REI fans have reviewed the pass with almost a 5 out of 5-star rating and note the convenience of purchasing the pass from REI. “The national park pass is the best deal in town. Rei gets it to you quicker than the national park service,” one purchaser shared.
