Target is currently offering $40 off of a future qualifying purchase over $40 when approved for a credit or debit Target RedCard. While store credit cards’ benefits are not usually as profitable as other credit cards that can earn perks like free travel and upgrades, the Target debit card (not the credit card) is worth looking into getting.
The Target debit card has no annual fee, and it does not result in a hard pull on your credit report. Therefore, if you open multiple credit cards a year and do not want a new application to affect your 5/24 score, the Target debit card checks that box.
Note: The 5/24 rule is a Chase-specific rule that states if you have opened five or more credit cards in the past 24 months, Chase will reject your application. The five spots do not just apply to Chase cards — American Express®, Citi®, Capital One, and even store cards count towards 5/24. Most business cards like the Chase Ink Business Preferred® and American Express Business Gold do not count towards 5/24. The exception is business cards from Capital One, Discover®, and TD Bank, which will show up on a credit report and count towards 5/24.
The application for the Target debit card can be completed online at target.com/redcard or in-store.
When you apply and are approved for the Target debit card, you are mailed a coupon code for $40 off of a purchase over $40. The coupon can be used once in-store and once online for a total of $80 of savings. Be sure to take a photo of the coupon code in case the store cashier discards the coupon after you use it in-store. The coupon expires on September 17, 2022.
In addition to the $80 savings, the Target RedCard debit card comes with benefits such as 5% off of Target purchases, free shipping at Target.com, and more.
Plus, after using the initial $40 coupon twice for $80 in savings at Target, you can close the debit card and requalify for this promotion the next time it is available, as long as it has been at least 90 days since you last had the card. Therefore, it is possible to save $80 again and again since Target has this promotion regularly.
