Fourth-quarter defense helps Pewamo-Westphalia boys basketball win district title

WESTPHALIA — It seemed early on Friday night that offense would be the reason the Pewamo-Westphalia boys varsity basketball team would win a district championship.

But it was a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter that allowed the Pirates to walk off their home floor with a district title.

P-W defeated Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian, 49-43, in a Division 3 district final.

The Mustangs cut the deficit to 45-42, until Grady Eklund made a free throw and Pohl made two to make it a six-point game. The Mustangs ran out of time, as P-W celebrated at center court.

“We preached defense the whole halftime... I thought at times we had some breakdowns in the second half, but for the most part our guys really did a heck of a job, working their butts of and following through,” P-W coach Dominic Schneider said.

Schneider called it the “best well-rounded game” the Pirates have played all season.

“NorthPointe (Christian) is one heck of a team,” Schneider said. “They’re very well-coached team. It took a lot of scouting to win this game. I thought our guys came out very well prepared.”
