Thousands rallied all across Slovakia on Friday to mark the seventh anniversary of the slayings of an investigative journalist and his fiancee. The rallies are part of a wave of protests against the pro-Russia policies of populist Prime Minister Robert Fico. People in Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, observed a minute of silence to honor Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová, both age 27, were shot dead at their home in the town of Velka Maca, east of Bratislava, on Feb. 21, 2018.

French far-right leader Jordan Bardella on Friday cancelled his speech at the conservative CPAC conference in Washington after what he described as a Nazi salute by a speaker, an apparent reference to Steve Bannon, his National Rally (RN) party said. Bardella, 29, president of the RN, is the right-hand-man to the party's figurehead, Marine Le Pen, and is widely seen as a future presidential hopeful. His trip to the United States underlined an effort by the RN to build closer ties to U.S. President Donald Trump, with whom Le Pen has had a complex relationship.

Los Angeles district attorney to update public in Menendez brothers' resentencing case
The Los Angeles district attorney will give an update Friday on the case of Lyle and Erik Menendez, brothers who are seeking release after their 1996 conviction for the murder of their wealthy parents at their Beverly Hills home. District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who took office in December, has yet to say whether he supports the proposed resentencing for the brothers, which will be taken up at a March hearing and would make them immediately eligible for parole. The brothers were found guilty in the 1989 murders of their entertainment executive father, Jose, and their mother, Kitty Menendez, and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A lawsuit filed by 17 states challenging federal rules entitling workers to time off and other accommodations for abortions may proceed, a federal appeals court ruled. The Eighth Circuit Court's decision on Thursday reverses Eastern District of Arkansas U.S. District Judge D.P. Marshall, Jr.'s dismissal of the case in June after he found that the states lacked standing to sue. Eighth Circuit Chief Judge Steven M. Colloton, who was appointed by former President George W. Bush in 2003, wrote in Thursday's opinion that the states do have standing since they are subject to the federal rules.

Five people were charged with second-degree murder last week in the death of Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man whose body was found discarded in a field this month.
