Football: Watertown falls to No. 3 Yankton; Deuel tops Webster Area

WEBSTER — Deuel used a solid defensive effort to turn back Webster Area 30-6 in a Northeast Conference football game on Friday.

The Cardinals (3-1) intercepted four passes and notched two return touchdowns in the victory. Braydon Simon tied a school record with three interceptions, returning one of them 17 yards for a touchdown. Gavin Benck also scored on a 55-yard fumble return and Carver Nothem added an interception.

Trey Maaland tossed scoring passes to Owen Quail (6 yards) and Gabe Sather (11 yards) for Deuel's offense.

Ronnie Begalka recorded eight tackles and Isaac VanWormer, Ty Lovre, Benck and Nothem five apiece to lead Deuel's defense.

Webster Area (0-4) scored in the second half on a 79-yard TD jaunt by Carson Mount. Jacob Keller intercepted a pass.

Yankton 41, Watertown 7: Another big game from Juven Hudson wasn't enough to prevent the Arrows (1-2) from dropping the Eastern South Dakota Conference game to the third-rated Class 11AA Bucks (3-0). Hudson rushed 31 times for 206 yards and an 80-yard touchdown run.

Mason Whiting had five solo tackles and three assists, Caden Beauchamp five solos including a quarterback sack, Ashton First in Trouble three solos and two assists and Jesse Werner three and one for the Arrow defense.

Rugby Ryken ran for TD runs of 2 and 14 yards and also tossed scoring passes to Gavin Swanson (24 yards), Cody Oswald (1 yard) and Austin Gobel (26 yards) for the Bucks. Evan Serck added a 1-yard TD plunge. Ryken completed 16 of 25 passes for 218 yards. Swanson ran 14 times for 161 yards.

Hamlin 46, Britton-Hecla 0: Luke Fraser rushed for 111 yards and three scores (52, 3 and 12 yards) and also caught two passes for 99 yards to two TDs (51, 48) to help third-rated Class 9AA Hamlin improve to 4-0. Kadyn Swenson rushed for 44 yards and a 3-yard TD and quarterback Tyson Stevenson completed five of eight passes for 188 yards.

Zach VanMeeteren recorded eight tackles and Troy Randall Jr., Simon Vander Vorst and Dawson Noem each 6.5 for Hamlin.

Collin Beaner had nine tackles and BoDell Davidson six for Britton-Hecla (2-2), which was limited to 65 yards of total offense.

Castlewood 60, Dell Rapids St. Mary 6: Lane Tvedt accounted for 347 yards of total offense and six scores to lead the third-rated Class 9A Warriors (3-0) to the Dakota Valley Conference win. He ran for 125 yards and three scores (1, 33 and 55 yards) and completed nine of 14 passes for 122 yards and three other scores. Jackson Schofield caught TD passes of 37 and 55 yards and Quincy Thu hauled in a 38-yarder. Adam Heyn recorded 6.5 tackles and Booker Schooley 5.5.

Gabriel Lindeman hauled in an 8-yard scoring pass from CJ Smith for St. Mary (1-3). Lincoln LeBrun was credited with 6.5 tackles and Lindeman five.

Estelline-Hendricks 41, Iroquois-Lake Preston 16: Braxton Saathoff scored on an interception return, 2-yard run and 1-yard TD pass from Mattix Hausman to lead the Redhawks (1-2) to victory. Joseph McAninch ran for 144 yards and a 10-yard TD and Hausman 94 yards and a 34-yard return for EH, which also got a 75-yard kickoff return score from Wyat James. Tanner Loomis made six tackles and Braxton Jongeling five.

The Sharks (0-4) had a 60-yard TD run by Josh McMasters and a fumble recovery in the end zone from Jake Larson. McMasters finished with 74 yards rushing. Riley Casper tallied eight tackles and Larson five.

De Smet 58, Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 0: Seven players scored touchdowns to propel third-rated Class 9B De Smet (3-1) to the Dakota Valley Conference win. Trace Van Regenmorter had punt return TDs of 23 and 46 yards and Kadyn Fast rushed for 52 yards and two scores. Ganon Henrich, Gannon Gilligan and Brody Halverson also had TD runs and Gannon Gruenhagen hauled in a 17-yard TD pass from Britt Carlson.

Dylan Zell notched eight tackles, RJ Cleveland four and Noah Harrison two quarterback sacks for De Smet.

Groton Area 20, Clark-Willow Lake 14: Andrew Marzahn's 25-yard TD reception from Lane Tietz in the fourth quarter lifted Groton Area (2-2) to the Northeast Conference win. Tietz , who went 11-for-18 passing for 118 yards, also connected with Teylor Diegel on a 20-yard TD pass. Korbin Kuecker added a 66-yard scoring run. Kuecker made three solo tackles and 11 assists and Diegel and Ryder Johnson each intercepted passes.

Trey Huber (1 yard) and Mitch Larson (14 yards) scored on TD runs for the Cyclones, now 1-3. Huber rushed for 88 yards. Jack Helkenn had four solo tackles and seven assists and Griffin Musser two and five to go with an interception.

Canistota 46, Florence-Henry 0: Fourth-rated Class 9A Canistota (2-2) snapped a two-game skid with touchdown runs from Tye Merrill (30 and 36 yards), Tage Ortman (1 yard) and Joseph Bond (5 yards). Ortman threw for 126 yards and tossed TD passes to Cayden Scott (66 yards) and Bond (7 yards). Merrill finished with 136 yards rushing for Canistota, which also had two safeties on defense.

Tegan Sumner made 13 tackles, Clay Trupe seven and Mehki Keller six for Florence-Henry (1-2), which was limited to 23 total yards. Keller also had an interception.

Elkton-Lake Benton 44, Deubrook Area 20: Ryan Krog passed for 134 yards and two scores and ran for 129 and three others to lift the 4-0 Elks past the 3-1 Dolphins in the Dakota Valley Conference game. Tanner Stein and Carson Griffith each had TD receptions and Blake De Vries added a TD run. Riddick Westley contributed 126 yards rushing. De Vries added 10 tackles, Krog 7.5 and Griffith six with three sacks.

Colin Bauman led the Dolphins, completing 14 of 25 passes for 198 yards and three scores. Jacob Jorenby, who made six catches for 127 yards, had two TD receptions nd Devon Landmark one.

Sioux Valley 55, Hill City 18: The Cossacks (3-1) bounced back from their first loss with a win that included four touchdowns and 141 yards rushing from Donovan Rose. He returned a kickoff 87 yards for one score and added TD runs of 4, 14 and 65 yards. Boden Schiller (37 yards), Lane Liebsch (2), Hudsyn Ruesink (3) and Brock Christopherson (35) also added TD runs, Schiller added 103 yards rushing. Christopherson had 10 tackles and Liebsch and Wyatt Hockett each nine.

Grayson Rahn scored on a 60-yard run and a 30-yard pass from Devin Buehler for Hill City (1-3). Rahn rushed for 149 yards, caught four passes for 46 yards and joined David Gomez with six tackles. Buehler had seven stops.

Vermillion 22, Milbank 16: Vermillion (1-2) used 155 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Ty Hertz to down Milbank (0-3). Zoan Robinson caught a TD pass for the Tanagers, who led 16-0 at halftime.

Garrett Mertens threw for 171 yards and ran for 58 yards and two TDs for Milbank (0-3).

Chester Area 50, Arlington 0: Jovi Wolf rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown and also caught two passes for 66 yards and another score for the Flyers (3-1). Garrett Hansen made 10 tackles. Arlington slipped to 0-3.

Aberdeen Roncalli 70, Dakota Hills 0: Abe Kretchman returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score and also added rushing touchdowns of 8 and 32 yards to lead Roncalli (4-0). Maddox May and Kaden Larson each added two TD runs and Keegan Stewart picked up a blocked punt and returned it 3 yards for another TD. May rushed for 90 yards and Larson 77. Dakota Hills fell to 0-4.

Tri-Valley 52, Sisseton 0: The Redmen slipped to 1-3 with the loss to Tri-Valley (3-1).

Hitchcock-Tulare 67, Waverly-South Shore 0: The second-rated Class 9B Patriots upped their record to 4-0. The Coyotes slipped to 0-4.

Landon Puffer caught five passes for 123 yards and three TDs (56, 37, 10) and had two interceptions, one he returned 55 yards to the end zone. Erik Salmen ran for 133 yards, scored on runs of 55 and 30 yards and also added a safety; Carter Binger scored on a 4-yard run and threw for 129 yards and three TDs and Riley Fliehe added two TD runs.

Tiospa Zina 48, Omaha Nation 6: The Wambdi pushed their record to 2-1 and dropped Omaha Nation to 0-3.

LaMoure-Litchville/Marion, N.D. 17, Tri-State 0: LaMoure-Litchville-Marion remained unbeaten (4-0) and dropped Tri-State to 0-4.
