Fisk University president out after 18 months

Well, that didn't last long.

Good morning, friends, this is Tennessean storytelling columnist Brad Schmitt, a bit stunned by news this weekend that Fisk University once again is making a leadership change.

President Vann Newkirk, Sr. has parted ways with Fisk — one of Nashville's two historically Black colleges and universities — after only 18 months in the job, reporter Anika Exum writes.

The Fisk board gave no explanation in a news release announcing the departure.

Fisk has seen turbulent times with its top spot in recent years. Newkirk was the fourth president at the university since 2015.

Newkirk replaced Kevin Rome two years ago amid allegations from a man who said Rome vandalized his home, damaged his plumbing, drugged him and threatened to hurt him. Rome's lawyer denied all those charges.

Despite this latest leadership change, Fisk, Nashville's oldest university, has grabbed some positive headlines recently.

In February, Fisk announced it will be the first HBCU to launch a gymnastics team. (I've got a look at blue-chip teen recruit Morgan Price coming soon.)

And in June, the storied Fisk Jubilee Singers, with acclaimed music director Paul T. Kwami at the helm, performed a critically renowned concert at the Ryman Auditoriumn to celebrate the a cappella troupe's 150th anniversary.
