DEMING – Riding on the heels of a highly-successful Salsa Festival weekend, Deming MainStreet Executive Director Chelsea Evans had no time to rest for Tuesday’s National Night Out event at Luna County Courthouse Park.

On a national scale, Night Out has been a community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, and a more caring places to live.

Deming Luna County MainStreet hosted the fifth annual event from 6 to 8 p.m. Night Out was a free event.

“We are making this a youth-oriented event and encourage families to come out and build bonds with our law enforcement and first responders,” said Evans.

Evans lined up at least 40 nonprofits who set up tables and booths with free giveaways and fun games for the children. The nonprofit organizations also set up tables and booths and provided valuable information about their organizations and how they serve the community. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August (Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October).

Neighborhoods across the country host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.

DJ Greg Morrow kept an overflow park crowd thoroughly entertained from the gazebo. While people danced, Morrow announced winners of prizes that were donated by local businesses.

Local law enforcement grilled free hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings and soft drinks.

There was a dunking booth, Native Air made a helicopter landing, and the U.S. Border Patrol Honor Guard presented the colors to open the event.

This local event hopes to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community, Evans noted. It provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
