Fire in unoccupied Centerville house under investigation

CENTERVILLE — Fire in a three-story unoccupied house valued at $1.2 million on Short Beach Road on Monday night is under investigation, a fire official said.

Firefighters with the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department responded at 8:50 p.m. to 26 Short Beach Road, Capt. Thomas Goodearl said in a statement.

Crews found the house with flames venting from the third floor on the rear of the structure, he said. The fire moved through all three floors of the house and additional resources were brought to the scene from surrounding fire departments.

Fire crews worked on each floor and the roof until the fire was brought under control, Goodearl said in the statement.

One firefighter was evaluated for an injury, he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The COMM fire department received assistance from Hyannis, Barnstable, Cotuit, West Barnstable, Mashpee, Yarmouth and Sandwich fire departments. The Massachusetts Fire Marshal's Office, Barnstable County BCI, Barnstable Police Department, Red Cross and Barnstable building and electrical inspectors also assisted.

The assessed value of the 4,585-square-foot modern house, built in 2003, is $1,122,900, according to Barnstable records.
