Fed's Powell sees 'shortlived' economic impact from Omicron

Jan 11 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday said he expects only a "shortlived" impact on employment and economic growth from the fast-spreading Omicron variant that has driven U.S. and global coronavirus infections to record levels this month.

Powell, answering a question during his renomination hearing before the Senate Banking Committee, said there may be a pause in hiring and growth in the near term because of Omicron but "it should be shortlived," and in ensuing quarters the outlook could be "very positive" as infections subside.
