European committee takes a second look at Alzheimer's drug and now says it should be approved
A European regulatory committee now recommends approval of the Alzheimer’s treatment lecanemab a few months after rejecting the drug. Biogen said Thursday that the drug, known in the U.S. as Leqembi, received a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use as a treatment for early Alzheimer’s disease. The European Commission is now expected to make a marketing authorization decision in the next few months.

Democrats in Congress urge Biden to sanction Israelis over West Bank violence
Nearly 90 Democratic lawmakers urged U.S. President Joe Biden to sanction members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government over anti-Palestinian violence in the West Bank, according to a letter released on Thursday. Urging Biden to send a message to U.S. partners before he leaves office, the members of Congress said Israeli cabinet members Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir had incited violence by Israeli settlers in the occupied territory. "We write to express our deep concern about the rise in settler violence, settlement expansion, and measures adopted to weaken the Palestinian Authority and otherwise destabilize the West Bank," they said in the letter.

Pennsylvania courts get lawsuits over ballot-counting in Senate contest headed toward a recount
Republicans went to court in Pennsylvania on Thursday amid vote counting in the U.S. Senate election between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican David McCormick, as the campaigns prepare for a recount and press counties for favorable ballot-counting decisions. The lawsuits ask courts not to allow counties to count mail-in ballots where the voter didn’t write a date on the return envelope or wrote an incorrect date. The two GOP suits could be among many before the last vote in the Senate race is counted, especially with the contest headed toward a state-mandated recount.

Former AP German-language service head Ulrich Renz, who covered Nazi trials, dies at 90
Ulrich Renz, a former head of The Associated Press German-language service who also covered the trials of leaders of the Auschwitz death camp in World War II, has died at the age of 90. Renz died Monday, according to Peter Gehrig, a close friend for 50 years and a former AP colleague who lived in the same senior citizen residence in Frankfurt. Widely known as “Uli,” Renz began working for the AP in Germany in 1971, after a stint at United Press International.

United Nations special rapporteur for torture Alice Edwards said on Thursday she is alarmed over allegations that Ecuador's former Vice President Jorge Glas was suffering torture while detained at the Andean country's La Roca prison. "I am disturbed by medical and other reports which suggest that Mr. Glas was subjected to torture, including dislocated thumbs, lacerations on his wrists from the over-use of handcuffs, and contusions and bruising on his arms, thighs and thorax, indicative of physical beatings," she said in a statement. Glas was detained in April this year after Ecuadorean security forces stormed Mexico's embassy in Quito, where he was holed up after seeking asylum.

Hostages freed from Gaza meet with Pope Francis and press campaign to bring remaining captives home
A delegation of former hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and their relatives met Thursday with Pope Francis and expressed hope that the incoming and outgoing U.S. administrations would work together to bring the remaining hostages home. The freed hostages included Yelena Troufanov, who was released last November but whose son Sasha remains in Gaza and appeared in a video released Wednesday by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. “You see in the picture how my child has changed over the course of this year,” Yelena Troufanov told a news conference in Rome after the papal audience.
