Nick Smith Jr. is practicing. What Eric Musselman said about when Arkansas basketball star would play
FAYETTEVILLE — After weeks of being unable to provide any update on the status of his star player, Arkansas basketball coach Eric Musselman gave Razorback fans a glimmer of hope Wednesday. Musselman said freshman guard Nick Smith Jr. has been practicing with the team and could return to the court soon.
The No. 1 prospect nationally in the class of 2022, Smith has missed the past 13 games for what the team called "right knee management." He missed Arkansas' first six games for the same reason, returned for five games and was held out again.

Smith had not been practicing with the team while rehabbing his knee. Musselman said Wednesday that Smith had been back at practice "the last few days." He did not travel with the team for its game at Kentucky on Tuesday so he could continue working with trainers, but Musselman indicated a return could be close.
"We are optimistic and hopeful that Nick will be able to play sometime in the near future," he said.
Smith's return would be a major boost for Arkansas at an opportune time. The final month of the regular season presents plenty of challenges for the Razorbacks, including road games to Texas A&M and No. 5 Tennessee and rematches against No. 3 Alabama and Kentucky.
Smith is one of two key players missing time for the Razorbacks. Forward Trevon Brazile suffered an ACL tear that ended his season in early December. Both Brazile and Smith were meant to be key players in Arkansas' rotation this season, and losing them has been a major reason for some of the team's struggles. Musselman has said as much repeatedly, including after Arkansas' win over Kentucky.
"There's not many teams in the country that could play with these type of injuries we've dealt with and the quality of players that have not been able to participate with us and find a way," he said. "It's a resilient group."
