Elba’s Alvin Henderson Named Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year, Up for National Player of the Year

ELBA, Ala (WDHN) — Elba High School’s Alvin Henderson has been named the 2024-25 Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year, Gatorade announced Thursday. The senior running back, is the first athlete from Elba High School to receive this honor.

Henderson’s selection highlights his exceptional performance on the field, excellence in the classroom, and dedication to his community.

The award places Henderson in elite company, joining past winners such as Emmitt Smith, Peyton Manning, and DJ Lagway.

National Recognition

Henderson is one of three finalists for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award. He joins Keelon Russell, a senior quarterback from Texas committed to Alabama, and Jackson Cantwell, a junior offensive tackle from Missouri, in contention for the national honor.

Record-Breaking Season

The 5-foot-10, 198-pound senior had a historic season, rushing for a state-record 3,620 yards and leading the Tigers (11-3) to the Class 1A state semifinals. He broke his own state record of 3,523 yards set in 2023 and carried the ball 276 times, averaging an astonishing 13.1 yards per carry with 61 touchdowns.

Henderson also set the state career rushing record with 10,930 yards, ranking fifth nationally in high school football history. His efforts have earned him a spot in the Navy All-American Bowl in January.

Off the Field

Henderson has made an impact beyond football as a role model in his community. He volunteers as a morning greeter at Elba Elementary School, serves as a youth football coach, and participates in community service initiatives through his church.

“Alvin is a special player,” said Berry Bess, head coach at Georgiana High School. “His speed-to-power combination is one of a kind. Add in his football sense and awareness, and that’s extraordinary for a high school player.”

Academics and Future Plans

Henderson has maintained a 3.13 GPA and has signed to play football at Auburn University next fall. His academic and athletic achievements embody the spirit of the Gatorade Player of the Year program, which recognizes excellence on and off the field.

A Legacy of Excellence

Henderson joins a distinguished list of past Gatorade Alabama Football Players of the Year, including Ryan Williams (2023-24, 2022-23), Earl Woods (2021-22), and Conner Harrell (2020-21). The award celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes across 12 sports, and Gatorade has donated over $5.6 million in grants to winners to support community initiatives.
