East Bladen retires Lacey Suggs’ basketball jersey
ELIZABETHTOWN — There will never be another East Bladen girls’ basketball player to wear a No. 12 jersey.
Lacey Suggs, the sensational southpaw who starred for the Eagles and at UNC Wilmington, had her jersey retired Tuesday night inside the gym where she grew into one of the best high school basketball players in the Cape Fear region.
During her time at East Bladen, the three-time all-state performer and conference player of the year helped the Eagles earn 106 wins with just 11 losses. Suggs led East Bladen to three league titles and the NCHSAA 2-A state semifinals in her final season.
Suggs is the fourth East Bladen player to have her basketball jersey retired. The Kemp sisters, JaToya and Jazmine, had their jerseys retired in 2015. Dorthy Corbett experienced the honor in 2011.
A consistent double-double performer, Suggs scored 2,166 points and snagged 829 rebounds as an Eagle under longtime coach Patty Evers.
After starting her career at UNCW as a walk-on player, she earned a scholarship and was selected as a team captain each of her final three seasons with the program.
The 2019-20 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Suggs finished college with 1,059 points and an average of 11.3 per game.
