PNC's provisions for credit losses fell to $156 million in the reported quarter, reflecting an improvement in the broader macroeconomic outlook, compared with $232 million a year earlier.

Austria's far-right Freedom Party (FPO) and conservative People's Party (OVP) plan to improve the state's finances by scrapping climate-change-related measures and collecting more in dividends from state-owned companies, they said on Thursday. The European Union’s new commissioner for migration and internal affairs, Magnus Brunner, was in Athens on Thursday for policy talks with Greece, which has long been one of the major entry points into the bloc for migrants. Brunner, an Austrian conservative who took up the post late last year, has previously spoken about a need to bolster EU policy on deportations, a controversial issue within the bloc’s 27 member nations. EU lawmakers last year approved a major overhaul of migration laws collectively known as the Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Over 1,000 people attended a memorial ceremony Thursday in central Paris for the founder of France’s main far-right party, Jean-Marie Le Pen, who died last week at the age of 96. The “mass for the repose of the soul” at Notre-Dame du Val-de-Grâce church took place under tight security, as Le Pen was a polarizing figure, convicted multiple times of antisemitism, discrimination and inciting racial violence. A private funeral took place last week in Le Pen's hometown of La Trinité-sur-Mer in Brittany.

A British lawmaker pleaded guilty Thursday to beating a man in a street during an incident captured on video. Mike Amesbury, 55, a member of Parliament who was suspended by the ruling center-left Labour Party after the Oct. 26 incident, pleaded guilty in Chester Magistrates’ Court to assaulting a 45-year-old man. Amesbury punched his constituent Paul Fellows in the head on a sidewalk in the town of Frodsham, in the northwest of England, and knocked him to the ground after Fellows complained to him about a bridge closure in town, prosecutor Alison Storey said.
