Webb telescope observes violence around Milky Way's central black hole
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope is providing the best look yet at the chaotic events unfolding around the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, observing a steady flickering of light punctuated by occasional bright flares as material is drawn inward by its enormous gravitational pull. Webb, which was launched in 2021 and began collecting data in 2022, is enabling astronomers to observe the region around the black hole - called Sagittarius A*, or Sgr A* - for extended periods for the first time, allowing them to discern patterns of activity. The researchers observed a constant flickering of light from the swirling disk of gas surrounding the black hole - called an accretion disk.

Colombia's Petro says drug traffickers want to kill him with missiles
BOGOTA (Reuters) -Colombia's President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday said drug traffickers have acquired two missiles which they plan to fire at his plane, in order to kill him, citing the success of his efforts to tackle the drug trade. Colombia's security forces seized a record 883.8 metric tons of cocaine in 2024, according to the ministry of defense, up from 746.3 tons in 2023.

ELN rebels launch 3-day armed strike in Colombia's northwest as violence in rural areas escalates
Businesses shut down and public transport was at a standstill Tuesday in Colombia’s Choco department, as rebels from the National Liberation Army, or ELN, launched a three-day “armed strike” that confines civilians to their homes and restricts commercial activity. The move comes as violence worsens in several rural areas of Colombia, including the Choco region in the west, where 1,600 people have been displaced from their homes over the past two weeks, according to Colombia’s human rights ombudsman’s office. Colombia’s military rejected the move on Monday and said that the ELN is trying to keep civilians off the region's roads and rivers to facilitate the transport of equipment used in illegal gold mines and to move drug shipments.
