DSU police officer receives First Responder Award on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Juan Fulgencio-Milan, an officer with the Dixie State University Police Department, has been awarded the First Responder Reward by the Utah National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
For his community service on the DSU campus, as well as surrounding areas, Fulgencio-Milan was formally recognized with the reward at a ceremony in Salt Lake City on Monday. Fulgencio-Milan is not only an officer at DSU but a current student getting his second bachelor's degree in Sports Management. He has been working at DSU for three years.
“Officer Juan, as he is known around campus, utilizes valued Latinx heritage and unique and personal experiences to continually encourage and motivate many students on campus, guiding them toward success, including a large percentage of first-generation and minority students of which many look to him as an example and role model,” said DSU Police Chief Blair Barfuss, who nominated Fulgencio-Milan for the award.
Fulgencio-Milan is a first-generation college student and earned his first bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration. He also sponsored himself through the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy and became a police officer in 2018.
“There isn’t a task or service opportunity Officer Juan will not do for our Dixie State University community,” Barfuss said. “Officer Juan epitomizes exemplary community-oriented policing and service, and is an invaluable member of our university.”
