Drew Barrymore wants a bite of the 'chicken sandwich phenomenon' but without the chicken

Self-proclaimed foodie and flexitarian Drew Barrymore told Yahoo Finance she wants in on the "chicken sandwich phenomenon," but there's only one problem, she doesn't eat chicken.

The solution, the actress and talk-show host said, is Quorn. As the newly-named "Chief Mom Officer" for the meat-free brand, Barrymore says the company's Classic ChiQin Cutlet is "the answer" to her chicken sandwich cravings.

Quorn's mission is to get more people to eat meat-free, sustainably-produced high-protein foods. Its products, which include meatless nuggets, ChiQin cutlets, and ChiQin wings, are made from mycoprotein, a protein-rich, sustainable food source. To make mycoprotein, Quorn takes a natural, nutritious fungus from the soil (Fusarium venenatum), then uses the age-old process of fermentation to create the base of its products.

In her new role, Barrymore hopes to "find people where they are and find out what they need" when it comes to food, with affordability and accessibility in focus.

The chicken sandwich phenomenon — which kicked in 2019 between Chick-fil-A and Popeyes — is still raging, with Panera just entering the race in March, joining the list of joining the ever-lengthening list of competitors, including McDonald's (MCD), Taco Bell (YUM), KFC, Wendy's (WEN) and Burger King (QSR), among others.

But there's still relatively little competition in the meat-free space. In January, KFC (YUM) announced the debut of Beyond Fried Chicken for a limited time only. Meanwhile, other names in the fast casual chain are also gaining attention like vegan food chains Slutty Vegan and Project Pollo.

However the market is growing — and quickly. According to a report from Grand View Research, the global meat substitute market size is expected to reach USD 234.7 billion by 2030. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 42.1% from 2022 to 2030.

While Quorn foods aren't available in any fast food chains as of now, its products are available in the U.S. in the frozen food sections at Kroger (KR), Whole Foods (AMZN) and recently launched in Costco (COST) in the San Francisco Bay Area and the state of Texas.
