Dover woman, 60, dies after being hit by car. Neighbor recounts moments after accident.

DOVER — Laural Collier, returning home to the Cocheco Park apartments, said she rushed to Edith Gordon moments after her neighbor was struck by a car Sunday morning.

"I was there about 30 seconds after it happened, and I kept telling her we were there, and help was coming," Collier said.

Gordon, a 60-year-old resident of the apartments, died as a result of her injuries, a Portsmouth Regional Hospital spokesperson confirmed Monday night. Dover police on Tuesday confirmed the death as well.

"I held her hand and I am at least glad she was not alone," Collier said. "A woman police officer came, and she also held her hand and talked with her."

Dover police said Gordon was crossing Chestnut Street, in a marked crosswalk, when she was struck by a southbound 2009 Toyota Matrix that had moments earlier turned onto the road from Orchard Street. The operator of the Toyota was a 68-year-old Dover woman who was "distraught," after the accident, according to police.

The driver is expected to be cited for a violation of New Hampshire’s motor vehicle code, according to Dover police.

Dover police, fire and EMS responded and multiple citizens rushed to provide medical aid to Gordon, and to comfort the driver who stopped and cooperated after the accident, police said.

Neighbors remember Edith Gordon

Gordon lived in the Cocheco Park apartments located near the location of the accident.

On Tuesday, Collier said all the neighbors remain in shock, not knowing what to do. She said Gordon will be remembered.

"She was a quiet, reserved soul," Collier said. "She loved nature. She would sit by the river and watch the duck swim. She fed nuts to the squirrels. She was sweet natured."

"She was so sweet," said Deborah Calabro, another of her neighbors. "She engaged with everyone she ran into. Because of COVID, only the people on each floor came to know each other better. There are many people in that wing, including my mom, who can say wonderful things about her being a part of this big family."

The investigation

Police said there is no evidence speed or impairment contributed to the incident.
