The FBI said Friday that it arrested a Washington state woman in the fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Vermont. Teresa Youngblut, 21, was charged in Monday's killing of Border Patrol Agent David Maland, the FBI said. It said Youngblut and a German man who died in the firefight had been under surveillance for several days.

Egypt and Eni-Total consortium to sign deal on processing Cypriot natural gas for export
Egypt and a consortium made up of energy companies Total of France and Italy’s Eni will next month sign a key agreement to transport natural gas from an undersea deposit inside Cypriot waters to Egypt where it will be liquefied and processed for export, officials said Friday. Cypriot Energy Minister George Papanastasiou described the agreement as “most significant” because it allows the consortium to sort out all the technical details on how to get the gas from the Cronos gas deposit to Egyptian processing plants for liquefaction and eventual export to markets including Europe. Papanastasiou said the Eni-Total consortium, which holds exploratory licenses for seven of 13 areas or blocks inside Cyprus’ offshore economic zone, will make a final decision on how it will extract and convey the gas before the summer this year.

Germany's opposition leader said Friday his party will bring motions to toughen migration policy to parliament next week in one of its last sessions before the country's election, a risky move if they go to a vote and pass with the help of a far-right party. Friedrich Merz, whose center-right Union bloc leads polls ahead of Germany's Feb. 23 election, vowed Thursday to bar people from entering the country without proper papers and to step up deportations if he is elected chancellor. On Friday, he said that the Union will bring motions to parliament next week “that correspond solely to our conviction” and added: “We will introduce them independently of who approves them.”

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed on Friday that Russian troops have fought their way into the center of a strategically important eastern Ukraine town and raised the Russian flag there after a monthslong battle. The Russian soldiers were still fighting Ukrainian defenders left in Velyka Novosilka, which had around 5,000 residents before the war, according to the ministry. Ukrainian officials made no immediate comment, though they recently reported that Russia had increased its troop numbers in the area.
