money Documents: UC Health doctor performed genital exams in his apartment bedroom
The state medical board has suspended the license of a doctor accused of performing medically unnecessary ultrasounds of patients' genitals in the bedroom of his apartment and secretly videorecording many of them.
In documents dated Feb. 8, the State Medical Board of Ohio notified Dr. Rudel Saunders of the suspension, saying he "presents a danger of immediate and serious harm to the public."
The allegations involve five unnamed patients. The medical board said Saunders "solicited" the men to participate in the ultrasound examinations, which took place between February 2022 and January of this year.
Documents say Saunders claimed that he was required to complete a certain number of ultrasounds for his training program, which was false.
Saunders was a resident in training with UC Health. He received his medical degree from the University of Toledo.
UC Health spokeswoman Amanda Nageleisen said Saunders "is no longer affiliated with our institution."
The first patient listed in medical board documents was invited to Saunders' apartment on Feb. 14, 2022, "under the guise of performing a medical examination." Public records say Saunders' apartment was in Northside.
The examination consisted of ultrasounds on various areas of the man's body, including his testicles, documents say. It was done "for no legitimate healthcare purpose," the documents say.
Saunders, according to the documents, didn't wear gloves, didn't take steps to "ensure the patient's privacy" and surreptitiously videorecorded the examination.
The documents describe similar incidents involving four other patients. The most recent took place Jan. 7.
An attorney for Saunders listed in the documents said he was no longer representing him. Saunders could not be reached for comment. No criminal charges have been filed.
