DK Metcalf misses start of Seahawks' mandatory minicamp amid contract standoff, per report

In an offseason defined by a split from two of the franchise's most storied figures in Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner, the Seattle Seahawks again find themselves at odds with one of their star players.

Wide receiver DK Metcalf is not in attendance Tuesday for the start of the Seahawks' mandatory minicamp, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported. His absence is considered unexcused, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported, making Metcalf subject to a fine, though the Seahawks can choose whether to impose one.

Metcalf, 24, was a Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and has recorded 3,170 receiving yards and 29 touchdowns in three seasons. The former second-round pick and premier deep threat is expected to play a vital role for either Geno Smith or Drew Lock, who are vying to replace Wilson after the Seahawks traded the nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback in March to the Denver Broncos.

Metcalf is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract with a base salary of $3.986 million. He underwent foot surgery in February and is rehabbing in Los Angeles.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said in May he was optimistic that the receiver and the team could get on the same page.

"We want him to be here. He wants to be here," Carroll said. "We’ll figure it out. It’ll just take us some time, but we’ll get it done."

Metcalf's standoff comes after several other wide receivers reset the top of the market in the offseason with big-money deals, with Tyreek Hill (four years, $120 million), Davante Adams (five years, $140 million) and A.J. Brown (four years, $100 million) leading the way.
