  • Life Time, which owns and produces Dirty Kanza, has announced that the gravel race will be rescheduled from May 29 through 31 to September 10 through 13 in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Registered racers will have the option to keep their current entry and participate in the rescheduled event in September, defer their current entry to the 2021 event with a waived deferral fee, or receive a refund for their 2020 entry.

Dirty Kanza, widely regarded as the Super Bowl of gravel racing, has announced that it will be postponing the event, which is set to host 3,800 riders in Emporia, Kansas, from May 29 through 31, to September 10 through 13 in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are working to ensure that our athletes, who are training hard and looking forward to Dirty Kanza, have a race to participate in this year,” Kimo Seymour, president of Life Time Events and Media, said in a press release.

“We heavily considered other events in this new timing so as not to interfere with other scheduled races. We feel strongly this new date will allow athletes, promoters, sponsors and partners to come together for a fantastic event. Working together will be vital to ensure the health of our cycling community both on and off the bike,” Seymour said.

The Dirty Kanza team announced the news during a live Zoom video conference and on Facebook Live at the conclusion of their Dirty Kanza Virtual Camp this afternoon. The event team held the virtual camps in lieu of two in-person camps scheduled for March and April that had to be canceled.

Going forward registered riders will be able to choose from three options: they may keep their current entry and participate in the rescheduled event in September, defer their current entry to the 2021 event with a waived deferral fee, or receive a refund for their 2020 entry.

The Life Time Dirty Kanza team will continue monitoring the situation during the upcoming months.

“We know this situation changes from day to day, sometimes hour to hour,” Kristi Mohn, Life Time’s Dirty Kanza marketing manager told Bicycling. “Our hope is that by this fall we’ll be able to bring the gravel family together for the Dirty Kanza experience. Above all, everyone’s health and safety is our number one priority.”
