A 3-year-old girl with a “heart full of love” died after her family crashed into a tree in South Carolina, officials said.

The girl — Carter Greene — was known for enjoying bubbles and the beach. She was the beloved daughter of Detective Sgt. Daniel Greene, who lives in Walterboro and works for the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, July 30, officials said Greene was in his county-issued patrol SUV with his wife, daughter and another child. The vehicle veered off the right side of the road and hit a tree, according to deputies and the S.C. Highway Patrol.

One of the children, Carter, was flown to a medical center, where she was pronounced dead from crash-related injuries. The other people in the SUV were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said in a news release.

“The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office is reviewing policies per standard procedure,” officials wrote. “Greene was off-duty during the incident.”

The single-vehicle crash was reported at about 11 a.m. on Round O Road in the Cottageville area, roughly 40 miles northwest of Charleston.

Carter’s life was cut short as she prepared to start K3 classes. She attended Colleton Preparatory Academy, where she was in the “’Teeny Hawks’ cheer group,” according to a post on the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home website.

“She had a smile that could never be forgotten and she began each day as her favorite princess, which was herself,” her online obituary said. “She will always be remembered for her love of bubbles.”

The Colleton County coroner’s office didn’t immediately share additional information about Carter’s death with McClatchy News on Aug. 2.

An investigation into the crash was ongoing as of Aug. 1, state troopers said in a news release.
