DEMING – Young Deming High golfers are leaving a stamp on tournament play early this season. Freshmen Nicole Jasso and Riley Apodaca led both DHS golf teams to championship wins at the Hot Springs Invitational Tournament at Sierra de Rio golf course on Thursday, March 17.

Both players took top medalist honors for their respective groups among nine schools that competed in the 18-hole round at Truth or Consequences, NM.

Jasso carded the tournament-best on the girls’ side with an 89-stroke count. Apodaca posted the boys’ low score at 81.

“This turned out to be a really difficult day,” said DHS Coach James Williams. “The course is difficult to play in perfect weather, but the cold and windy conditions added to that. light of that I was pretty proud of our kids. The scores were up a little but considering the conditions, I would say they battled.”

“I was impressed with the effort on a tough day for golf,” Williams noted. “The play took seven hours to complete.”

Coach Williams will get a good look at Class 5A golf programs when the DHS teams compete Tuesday at Twin Warriors golf course in Bernalillo, NM.

“This will be the host site for this year’s state tournament and many of the top contenders in our class will be at this tournament on Tuesday,” Williams said.

This year’s format for state qualifying has changed. No longer are three target team scores required to reach the state tournament. Only the district champions will qualify, and three at-large teams will be announced.
