Cape Coral officials are remembering city attorney Delores Menendez as a thoughtful and caring woman who represented the city with dignity and respect.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce that City Attorney, Dolores Menendez passed away today,” said Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter in a press release Thursday afternoon. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her daughter and the rest of her family."

The long-serving public servant had planned to retire in 2024. The city did not release the cause of death.

She worked for the city of Cape Coral for 32 years and had a legal career in Florida that spanned 43 years.

She was a graduate of Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport. Her expertise included municipal law and land use.

Menendez started as the assistant city attorney in October 1991 before being promoted to the role of city attorney a decade later.

Cape Coral was beginning the process of searching for a new city attorney as Menendez planned to leave her position in the summer of 2024. However, she took an extended leave in April.

“I’d like everyone to keep Dolores and her family in your prayers," said City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn in a press release. "She was a caring woman who loved her family, cats, and profession, and she will be missed.”

Deputy City Attorney Brian Bartos, who also is planning to retire in the coming year, will fulfill the duties of the city attorney.

The city is contending with several legal issues such as the lawsuit with Waste Pro, the investigation into a City Council member Patty Cummings, and former city manager Rob Hernandez threatening a lawsuit, all of which the city has hired outside counsel.
