A man on Tuesday waived his right to a jury trial in the killing of a Georgia nursing student, a case that became a flashpoint in the national immigration debate. Jose Ibarra was charged in the February killing of Laken Hope Riley, whose body was found on the University of Georgia campus. A 10-count indictment accused Ibarra of hitting the 22-year-old Augusta University College of Nursing student in the head, asphyxiating her and intending to sexually assault her.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haiti's main airport remained closed on Tuesday, a day after violence erupted as the country swore in its new prime minister in a politically tumultuous transition. Life in much of the capital was frozen following the wave of violence, which came to a head when gangs shot a Spirit Airlines airplane, hitting a flight attendant and forcing the flights and airport to shut down. Heavily armed police in armored cars outside the airport checked trucks used for public transportation passing by.

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said on Tuesday that he believes the private sector should lead when it comes to payment sector innovations. Waller asked, “what is the fundamental market inefficiency that would be solved by government intervention and can only be solved by government intervention?” He noted, “if there isn’t a satisfactory answer, then I believe government shouldn’t intervene in private markets.” Waller did not comment on the monetary policy and economic outlook in his prepared remarks, which centered on the role the Fed plays in the payment system.

As Argentina's inflation rate cools, consumers still feel squeezed

NEW YORK (Reuters) -A New York state judge paused for a week further action on President-elect Donald Trump's conviction stemming from hush money paid to a porn star, a document made public on Tuesday showed. Justice Juan Merchan delayed at least through Nov. 19 any decision on whether to vacate Trump's conviction due to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in July that presidents are immune from prosecution involving their official acts. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office had said it agreed with a defense request to pause proceedings to consider how to approach the case in light of Trump's Nov. 5 election and looming inauguration in January 2025.
