Current, founding coaches celebrate as Mount Olive boys lacrosse earns 150th win

When Dave Gallucci was growing up in Budd Lake, he used to loan the mailman a lacrosse stick so they could have a catch. While shooting on a goal at his family's home, Gallucci said people walking their dogs "would wonder what kind of witchcraft it was."

To play high school lacrosse, he had to leave town. Gallucci played at Montville for his father, John Gallucci Sr..

Dave Gallucci came back home to coach at age 24, launching the Mount Olive High School boys lacrosse program in 2005 to "give the opportunity for kids to play that I didn't have."

The Marauders earned their 150th win, 8-3, at Rizk foe Montville on April 1.

But Gallucci wasn't at the helm anymore.

Though still a business teacher at Mount Olive, Gallucci moved on to coach at Newton – 16 years and 148 wins later. Chris Blough is now leading the Marauders. He's a Mount Olive resident who played at Roxbury, where he had most recently coached.

"I don't know if I'm really changing anything," Blough said. "I'm bringing positive energy to the program, which after the last couple of years, everybody needs. Going to Mount Olive, we want to instill that family culture, positive culture. We don't want to think about the negative things and just move forward each day and get better, play for each other, and have fun while we're doing it."

Blough didn't know about the upcoming milestone until Gallucci told him. Gallucci's transitional advice, "Get to 150 wins before 150 losses."

Mount Olive has 150 wins and 136 losses since its inception in 2005, reaching the 2018 NJSIAA Group 3 North final. But much more has changed than Xs and Os.

"In 2005, we were grabbing kids out of the hallways and saying, 'Here, use this. Learn lacrosse.'" said Gallucci, whose three sons all play lacrosse in Newton, while Blough's two daughters are in Mount Olive's youth program.

"In 2020, we had seven commitments to go on and play NCAA lacrosse. The town had changed. It started to become more of a lacrosse town."
