'Courageous honesty': Brockton mourns police officer known affectionately as 'Bez'

BROCKTON ― Sean Besarick, an officer in the Brockton Police Department and a well-loved community member, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Dec. 29, the department announced Monday. He was 48 years old.

Besarick, lovingly nicknamed "Bez," was a Brockton native. He graduated from Brockton High School in 1992 and served in the U.S. Navy for six years, earning multiple Bronze Star Medals, before becoming a Brockton police officer in 1998.

"Sean helped countless people over his 24 years as a police officer in good times and in bad," his obituary said.

Besarick leaves behind his wife of 21 years, Jennifer Besarick, and his two daughters, Amber and Abby.

His "greatest love, passion and purpose" was being a dad to his two daughters, his obituary said.

"Sean was always there for his girls whether it was playing a chauffeur, helping with schoolwork or just relaxing for 'movie night'."

"[He] could easily be spotted in the audience for countless hours at all the dance recitals and competitions his girls participated in. Sean never hesitated to take the stage for his precious daddy-daughter dances."

Besarick was also a huge fan of sports. He was a longtime fan of the New England Patriots, and enjoyed watching and attending games with family and friends, according to his obituary.

Most recently, he liked attending Boston Bruins games with his brother, Scott Besarick, a sergeant for the Brockton Police Department.

"With his love for hockey, Sean proudly supported and watched his nephews play in their young careers at Bishop Feehan High School," his obituary said.

Besarick also had a big interest in collecting sports cards and memorabilia.

He enjoyed traveling with his family, recently vacationing in Hawaii and Disneyland, and he was always up for planning the next destination.

"The best thing about Sean was he would always make you laugh either with him or at him," one person wrote on his tribute wall.

"You were like a brother to me," another wrote. "We went through so many good times and some bad times together but the love we had never wavered."

"With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the untimely passing of Brockton Police Officer Sean Besarick," the Brockton Police Department said via Twitter.

"We remember him for his courageous honesty."

His funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Church, 103 North Main St., West Bridgewater. Private Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the Sean Besarick Daughters' Education Fund, courtesy of Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton, MA 02301.
