'How am I meant to stay healthy?': Critical care nurse breaks down after finding empty supermarket shelves following 48-hour shift

A critical care nurse has posted a heartbreaking video after finishing a 48-hour shift to find no food left in the supermarkets.

Dawn Bilbrough broke down in tears as she pleaded for the public to stop stockpiling amid coronavirus fears.

The video appears to have been made in her car after she discovered empty shelves in the supermarkets following a gruelling shift.

In it she says: “So I’ve just come out of the supermarket. There’s no fruit and veg. I had a little cry in there.

“There’s no fruit, there’s no vegetables. I just don’t know how I’m supposed to stay healthy.”

“And those people... people are just stripping the shelves of basic foods. You just need to stop it. Because it’s people like me that are going to be looking after you when you’re at your lowest so just stop it. Please!

Dawn’s calls come amid growing concerns that health workers and the elderly are being left unable to find food due to people stockpiling.

Supermarkets have introduced strict measures to try and control panic buying and some have introduced dedicated hours so those in need of essential items can get what they need.

Sainsbury’s revealed it will only allow customers to buy a maximum of three of any single item, while Morrisons said it is limiting purchases across 1,250 lines.

Asda also announced it is restricting shoppers to three items on all food and closing its cafes and pizza counters, while temporarily reducing the opening hours of all its 24-hour stores for re-stocking.

Aldi has already introduced limits of four items per shopper across all products.

In an update posted on Twitter, BBC Yorkshire said: “Dawn has been overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness. She now has food and is OK. Thank you for all your calls, comments and messages of support.”
