Scientists document remarkable sperm whale 'phonetic alphabet'
The various species of whales inhabiting Earth's oceans employ different types of vocalizations to communicate. Sperm whales, the largest of the toothed whales, communicate using bursts of clicking noises - called codas - sounding a bit like Morse code. A new analysis of years of vocalizations by sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean has found that their system of communication is more sophisticated than previously known, exhibiting a complex internal structure replete with a "phonetic alphabet."

Apple interrogation of NYC worker about union drive was illegal, US labor board rules
The manager of an Apple Inc retail store in Manhattan violated U.S. labor law by asking an employee whether he supported a union campaign, a federal labor board has ruled in its first decision involving the tech giant. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in a single-page ruling late on Monday said the manager's questioning of the worker, who had raised concerns about pay at a group meeting, amounted to unlawful interrogation and upheld a decision by an administrative judge. The Democrat-controlled board also affirmed the judge's ruling that Apple illegally barred workers at the World Trade Center store from distributing union flyers.

Scientists are learning the basic building blocks of sperm whale language after years of effort
Scientists studying the sperm whales that live around the Caribbean island of Dominica have described for the first time the basic elements of how they might be talking to each other, in an effort that could one day help better protect them. Like many whales and dolphins, sperm whales are highly social mammals and communicate by squeezing air through their respiratory systems to make strings of rapid clicks that can sound like an extremely loud zipper underwater. The clicks are also used as a form of echolocation to help them track their prey.

US consumer watchdog fines Chime $3.25 million for delaying refunds
Digital bank Chime will pay a penalty of $3.25 million to the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for failing to issue timely refunds to customers who closed their accounts, and will return at least $1.3 million to customers, the regulator said on Tuesday. The fine is another example of the CFPB's increasing scrutiny of financial technology companies. The agency has proposed to regulate tech giants' digital payments and smartphone wallet services, and Director Rohit Chopra has called for better risk management at both fintech companies and banks.

German police cleared a pro-Palestinian protest camp on Tuesday at a courtyard of the Freie Universitaet Berlin, which had called for a stop to Israel's military operation in Gaza. Some 100 people set up two dozen tents on the campus on Tuesday, joining a call by the so-called "Student Coalition Berlin" to occupy German universities. Students from various Berlin universities joined the protest, carrying Palestinian flags and shouting slogans supporting Palestinians and denouncing Israel and Germany.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called a meeting of the Secret Services Council for Wednesday to discuss "alleged Russian and Belarusian influence in the Polish power apparatus in previous years", he wrote on social media platform X on Tuesday. As a hub for Western military supplies to neighbouring Ukraine during the more than two-year-old war with Russia, Poland has been on heightened alert for spying. "We must be aware that services, in this case Belarusian ones, worked with a person who had direct access to the Minister of Justice... who had access to various classified documents to which no intelligence service should have had access," Tusk said before a government meeting earlier on Tuesday.

India's Election Commission directed social media platform X on Tuesday to take down a video post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party after an opposition complaint that it promoted enmity among economically weaker groups. Inflation-hit Argentina launches new top banknote, worth just $10
The embattled country's central bank launched the new note on Tuesday, which it said will be rolled out gradually and features independence icons Manuel Belgrano and Maria Remedios del Valle, who were featured on previous smaller bills. The bank said that the 10,000 peso note, along with an even larger 20,000 peso bill that would come into circulation near the end of the year, would "facilitate transactions between users", simplify financial system logistics and cut costs. Argentina's triple-digit inflation and steadily depreciating peso currency has over years drained the value of the local tender, leading to a situation where people often carry huge stacks of cash with them to cover costs.
