Colin Jost says his mom was 'slightly thrown' after naming her grandchild Cosmo: 'Is it final?'

Colin Jost didn't get an immediate stamp of approval for his new baby's name from his mother.

The "Saturday Night Live" cast member and his wife Scarlett Johannsson revealed in August they had their first child together, a baby boy named Cosmo. On a Thursday episode of "Late Night with Seth Meyers," Jost revealed that his family was supportive of the name but his mom was a little apprehensive.

"My mom, I would say was slightly thrown by it," Jost told Meyers. "(She) didn't quite understand it, I don't know if she thought it was kind of like a hippy thing."

Meyers said even a few days after he and Johansson had the baby his mom would still call and give alternative names.

"She'd be like 'Cosmo, now is it final? Like did you submit the birth certificate,' " he added. "She's like 'Oh, OK. Interesting. 'Cause I was reading there's also a name Cosimo, with an 'i'. So that could also be an option.' "

Jost said once she started meeting other people named Cosmo she became more comfortable with it.

"She lives in Staten Island, eventually she started meeting various members of the Italian community who have a lot of Cosmo relatives. So then she would call and she would say 'I met someone they said their uncle's name is Cosmo. So, it is OK,' " the 39-year-old "Weekend Update" anchor recalled.

Jost and Johansson tied the knot in October 2020 and announced the nuptials through a post on the Instagram page for Meals on Wheels America, a charity providing food and resources to the elderly. The post shows a picture of a Staten Island Ferry with the words "Jost Married" across the top.

"Their wedding wish is to help make a difference for vulnerable older adults during this difficult time by supporting @mealsonwheelsamerica," the caption read. "Please consider donating to celebrate the happy couple by clicking the link in our bio."
