Cobb sparks Hardin-Simmons men past Sul Ross; McMurry men hold off Howard Payne
Chase Cobb poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Hardin-Simmons past Sul Ross 93-78 in an American Southwest Conference men’s basketball game Thursday at the Mabee Complex.
Will Bartoszek added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Cowboys (15-7 overall, 11-6 ASC). Kyle Brennon had 13 points, while Stamford grad Austin Brewer and Jordyn Vicente had 12, and 11, respectively off the bench.
Trey Nelson led Sul Ross (9-15, 6-13) with 15 points, and Logan Dixon had 14. Gabe Sanchez had 12, while Julian Paredes and Cooper grad C.J. Jemison had 11 each.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Cowboys, who wrap up the regular season against Howard Payne at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mabee Complex.
HSU, which already has nailed down a spot in the ASC tournament, is in third place – a game up on East Texas Baptist and two behind LeTourneau.
Mary Hardin-Baylor (21-2, 16-2) has won the regular-season title and will be the host the ASC tournament Feb. 24-26 in Belton.
McMurry clinches tournament berth
C.J. LeBlanc and Matt Pena scored 20 points each as McMurry beat Howard Payne 103-101 at Kimbrell Arena to clinch a berth in the ASC tournament.
Remy Minor, Elias Garcia and Rob Charles added 14 points each for the War Hawks (9-13, 7-10), while T.J. Hillard had 12. Garcia also had a team-high 11 rebounds.
Myles Brown led HPU (7-17, 6-13) with a game-high 28 points. Jaylan Ballou and Jerren Godfrey followed with 18 each. Frederick Watts had 13 and a game-high 14 rebounds. Tyrell Thompson also had a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds).
McMurry led by 12 (100-88) with 1:39 remaining in the game, but the Yellow Jackets went on an 11-0 run – highlighted by consecutive treys from Brown.
Minor hit two free throws with 14 seconds to go, and LeBlanc hit 1 of 2 free throws two seconds later for a 103-99 lead.
Thompson’s layup pulled the Jackets within two, and Garcia missed two free throws at the other end with two seconds left. HPU missed a last-second heave at the buzzer.
The War Hawks clinched the sixth seed for the eight-team ASC tournament.
WOMEN
Cowgirls win fourth straight
Brittany Schnabel and Samantha Tatum scored 13 points each as HSU beat Sul Ross 79-62 at the Mabee Complex.
Hermleigh grad Kiki Gonzalez added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench, and San Angelo Central grad Parris Parmer had 10 points as the Cowgirls (17-4, 12-4) won their fourth consecutive game. Natasha Blizzard also had 10 rebounds and eight points.
HSU, ranked No. 7 in the region, is third in the ASC standings – a half-game ahead of UT-Dallas. East Texas Baptist (18-4, 14-3) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (21-2, 18-0) lead the conference.
The tournament will be played at ETBU in Marshall, starting Feb. 24.
Vania Hampton led the Lobos (13-11, 9-10) with a game-high 16 points. Alyssa Ramlochan was the only other Sul Ross player in double figures with 13.
Sul Ross, which is sixth in the ASC, has clinched a berth in the conference tournament.
HSU plays Howard Payne at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regular-season finale at the Mabee Complex.
McMurry fends off HPU
Destiny Mathews scored a game-high 24 points, and Wylie grad Valery Alvarado added 20 as McMurry beat Howard Payne 88-77 at Kimbrell Arena.
Emily Holland had 13 points for the War Hawks (3-19, 2-14), who outscored the Lady Jackets 30-19 in the fourth quarter to snap a two-game skid.
Amanda Turpin led HPU with 17 points. Bria Neal had 13, Lily Janek had 12, and Delaney Ingram had 10.
McMurry, which has won three of its past five games, ends its season against Sul Ross at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kimbrell Arena.
