Cleveland Browns select Ohio State center Luke Wypler with No. 190 pick in 2023 NFL Draft
BEREA — If you want some Browns-Ohio State history, this is the right NFL Draft for you.
The Browns chose center Luke Wypler on Saturday in the sixth round (No. 190 overall) of the draft.
Earlier Saturday, the Browns picked Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones in the fourth round (No. 111 overall).
It's the first time the Browns have chosen two Buckeyes in the same draft since 1965, when they took halfback Bo Scott in the third round and guard Ed Orazen in the 19th round.
Also, this is the first time the Browns have chosen two Ohio State O-linemen in the same year since they did it in 1959, when they picked Dick Schafrath and Ernie Spycholski.
Draft analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked Wypler fourth among centers in this year's class and assigned him a fourth- or fifth-round grade.
The Browns view Wypler as primarily a center as opposed to a center-guard combination.
"Luke was very productive for a very, very good Ohio State offensive line," Browns General Manager Andrew Berry said. "We think he has quickness and movement ability. I think what drew us to him, we thought he was a really good pass protector and particularly when he was isolated in one-on-one situations, so that's what really a appealed to us in that regard. And his visit with us, he's incredibly smart, incredibly driven, so we were excited to take him off the board in the sixth round."
Wypler, who will turn 22 on May 3, started all 26 of his games with the Buckeyes the past two seasons. He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection last season as a junior.
At 6 feet, 2 5/8 inches, Wypler figures to compete with Nick Harris to back up Browns starting center Ethan Pocic.
With their first six picks in this draft, the Browns selected ...
Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman (third round, No. 74 overall)
Baylor defensive tackle Siaki Ika (third round, No. 98)
Ohio State's Jones (fourth round, No. 111)
Missouri defensive end Isaiah McGuire (fourth round, No. 126)
UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (fifth round, No. 140)
Northwestern cornerback Cameron Mitchell (fifth round, No. 142)
