City View's Whittens lead West to 76-69 victory in Oil Bowl boys basketball game
Kyle Tucker earned a landmark coaching victory Friday night.
Tucker coached the West All-Stars to a 76-69 victory against the East All-Stars in the Oil Bowl boys basketball game at Rider Fieldhouse.
And in doing so, Tucker earned his first win against a team led by legendary Burkburnett coach Danny Nix.
“I was 0-for against him coming into tonight. I’m absolutely counting this on my coaching resume,” laughed Tucker, head basketball coach at Holliday. “What an honor to get to coach against him in this game. He’s someone I’ve always been able to use as a sounding board and get ideas from. He’s a legend.”
Nix announced his retirement from coaching in April after completing his 40th season at the helm of the Burkburnett basketball program. He leaves the game with an incredible 866-406 record, including 19 district championships, 11 regional tournament appearances and two trips to the state tournament.
“What a privilege this was to get to be a part of this. It’s been 43 years since I started coaching, but it really only feels like 15,” Nix said. “I really enjoyed getting to coach a couple of my guys one last time and to get to know some of these other great players.”
And Nix’s East All-Stars made a late push to send him out with an Oil Bowl win, too.
The West had pulled away in the fourth quarter on the back of a stellar shooting performance by City View’s Chris Whitten, who scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the final eight minutes.
The West led by as many as 15 points, but future Cameron University teammates TJ Newton of Burkburnett and Hirschi’s Ernest Young pulled the East within 74-69 with 21 seconds remaining. Newton hit a pair of 3-pointers, sparking a 10-0 rally in the final 1:30 of the game.
“You knew they were going to put on a run, especially when you got Ernest and TJ on the same team,” Tucker said. “I wasn’t feeling comfortable until the final horn.”
“They knocked down some great shots early and were able to get away from us,” Nix said. “I thought we had some things that could give them trouble late, but we couldn’t quite pull it out.”
Newton led the West with 18 points, with Young chipping in 14. Hirschi’s Jermaree Ingram added 15.
EXITING WITH NIX
While one longtime Nix assistant, James Moseley, is taking over the Burkburnett boys basketball program, another has chosen to join Nix in retirement.
Joe Thannert, affectionately knowns to everybody as Joe T., has been on Nix’s staff since he took over the Bulldogs.
Thannert has been fixture with the Burkburnett basketball program, and Nix’s lead assistant for roughly two decades.
COACHING A RIVAL
Nix and Tucker were happy to have a couple players on their respective teams who they had grown tired of playing over the past few seasons.
For Nix, that was the Hirschi duo of Young and Ingram.
“I have a lot of respect for those guys and their game. I’ve admired Ernest for the past few years and what he does on the court. He’s always calm and collected,” Nix said. “I think I might have coached a Hirschi player in the 1996 Oil Bowl, but it was nice to coach them rather than against them.”
Tucker’s West squad was headlined by City View twins Jaeden and Chris Whitten.
“There were some of those shots they took that I knew were going in. I saw too many of those last season,” Tucker said. “This team really came together in a short time, and it was an honor to coach them. There was a lot of talent on the floor tonight. The Wichita Falls area was well represented.”
