Chris Spielman promises bright future during induction into Detroit Lions' ring of honor
Detroit Lions great and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders introduced former linebacker Chris Spielman as the 19th member of the Pride of the Lions during halftime of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Team owner Sheila Ford Hamp received only a brief smattering of boos when she was mentioned by the public-address announcer before the ceremony. She stood off to the side of the lectern but did not speak.
It was Hamp’s first appearance in front of fans at Ford Field since she was booed while introducing Calvin Johnson during his Hall of Fame ring ceremony Sept. 26.
Spielman made a few comments, thanking the team and the fans. He’s now a special assistant to Hamp and president Rod Wood.
“It was truly a privilege and honor to represent you for eight years,” Spielman said. “And I’ve been given a second chance to do my best to represent you and give you what you deserve. And I promise you in the near future, the very near future, we will give you what you all want.”
A second-round pick and 29th overall out of Ohio State in 1988, Spielman was selected to four Pro Bowls during his eight seasons with the Lions from 1988 to 1995. He played his final two season in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills in 1996-97.

Spielman finished his Lions tenure as the team’s all-time leader with 1,138 tackles and helped the Lions to four playoff appearances and NFC Central titles in ’91 and ’93. Spielman had an interception in a 38-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys in 1991 divisional round, the Lions’ most recent playoff win.
Spielman made 17 tackles twice in his career and was voted as the Lions’ defensive MVP twice by his teammates.
At the conclusion of his comments, Spielman recognized his former Lions and Ohio State teammate William White, who is battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.
