Chillicothe man appointed to top male position in Order of Eastern Star organization
CHILLICOTHE― B. Wayne McLaughlin is hoping his new position overseeing state-wide operations of the Amaranth Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star will bring notoriety to Chillicothe.
McLaughlin, who has lived in Chillicothe for 35 years and has been with the charitable organization for 25 years, was appointed to Grand Worthy Patron this year, the highest position for a man in the organization. The Order of Eastern Star is hosting a celebration in honor of McLaughlin next month and he is using the event to show what Chillicothe has to offer.
"I want to show off Chillicothe to them. I want them to know our history. I want them to know the things we bring to the table," McLaughlin said. "I want this to be about all of those opportunities to show off our area to people who haven't been here before."
McLaughlin said the event is expected to draw over 250 visitors from across Ohio, including many who have never visited Chillicothe before. A speaker will be presenting about Ross County's connections to the Underground Railroad and the visitor's bureau will be talking about attractions in Chillicothe.
"These folks will go back to Cleveland, go back to Cincinnati and Columbus, go back to Warren and Akron, bragging about what a good time they had in Chillicothe," McLaughlin said. "A lot of people don't know what we have here."
The organization is made up of 2,000 people who are located primarily in larger cities. McLaughlin said his position in the organization also brings notoriety to Chillicothe.
Since being appointed to the position in January, McLaughlin has traveled the state to oversee the chapters and build relationships.
The two-day celebration in honor of McLaughlin will be held Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24. A reception will be held on Friday with food, Chillicothe history and entertainment. A celebration will be held on Saturday will gospel and lunch. For more information, contact Angela Young at 740-649-1501.
