Charlevoix police chief placed on leave, city retains legal counsel
CHARLEVOIX — Charlevoix Police Chief Gerard Doan has been place on administrative leave.
A complaint was filed against him by another city employee on Oct. 13, and the next day Doan was put on leave. The city has hired lawyers from Traverse City to look into the alleged events, according to Charlevoix's city manager Mark Heydlauff. Doan has also retained legal counsel.
Details of the complaint are not known at the time of publication. Heydlauff described the reason for Doan's leave as being "a personnel matter within the workplace" involving more than one instance.
With an annual salary of $92,600, Doan continues to get a paycheck while he is gone. He has held the role of police chief since 2005 and has been with the force for more than 30 years, according to Heydlauff.
Until the situation is resolved, deputy police chief Rob Scholey is in charge. He has been operating as head of the police department since Oct. 14 and will hold that role "indefinitely," according to Heydlauff.
Heydlauff was unsure of a timeline for a resolution, but indicated the city was in the process of attempting to resolve things with Doan relatively quickly.
He also expressed confidence in Scholey's leadership and felt there hadn't been any negative impacts to police department operations as a result of Doan's absence.
Doan has been out for over two weeks, as of publication of this article.
