The presidential candidate of Venezuela’s chief opposition coalition on Saturday sought to cultivate a mood of hope and possibility in a massive rally that marked the start of a campaign he admittedly never imagined leading. Edmundo González Urrutia, the former diplomat chosen by the coalition to replace the fiery leader María Corina Machado, invited thousands of supporters to gather in the community of La Victoria, his hometown. “I guarantee a peaceful transition in which all political forces will be able to exercise their rights as allowed by the constitution," González said, addressing an audience of retirees, young adults and residents of the capital who traveled to see him and locals of the once-thriving industrial community.

Thousands of protesters are expected to turn out for a rally in the nation's capital Saturday in support of Palestinian rights and an immediate end to Israeli military operations in Gaza. The event commemorates the 76th anniversary of what is called the Nakba, the Arabic word for catastrophe, and refers to the exodus of some 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were forced from what is now Israel when the state was created in 1948. Rally organizers, in an unusual step, did not apply for any permits from the National Park Service, which oversees the National Mall.

French police were hunting for armed robbers Saturday who hit a jewelry store on one of Paris' poshest streets, and media reports said the target was the exclusive Harry Winston boutique, self-described “Jeweler to the Stars." Paris police said the armed robbers arrived and left on motorbikes, firing a shot outside without causing any casualties. The luxury boutique was cordoned off as police investigators went in and out Saturday afternoon.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The first distribution of badly needed aid is expected to begin this weekend after rolling off a newly built U.S. pier off the coast of Gaza, even as aid workers warn much more access is needed to the besieged territory where famine might be under way. Israeli restrictions and heavy fighting in the war against the Hamas militant group — now in its eighth month — have left residents in parts of Gaza scrounging for weeds and animal feed, skipping meals and living on pale diets of bread. Deliveries to the territory that long has largely relied on humanitarian aid are still far from the average of about 500 trucks that entered daily before the war.
