Caitlin Clark part of Gatorade's largest campaign ever, reviving Michael Jordan tagline
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever rookie star Caitlin Clark said it is "surreal" and a "dream come true" to be part of Gatorade's largest branding campaign in the company's history, which revives the iconic "Is It In You?" tagline from Michael Jordan's superstar era of the 1990s.
The campaign also brings back the Gatorade-colored sweat in the new commercial, which launched Tuesday during Game 4 of the NBA's Western Conference Finals.
The 60-second ad begins with Jordan narrating. "Everything about the game has changed," he says as Clark walks in her No. 22 jersey with a white Gatorade towel slung over her shoulder, "except for the most important thing."
The commercial then cuts to a closeup of Clark staring at the camera as she bounces a basketball. "What you have inside," Jordan says. "It is what drives the game."
The marketing campaign tagline, "Is It In You?", was first introduced in the 1990s and continued into the early 2000s with Jordan dripping in Gatorade-colored sweat. The concept of “It,” according to Gatorade, is the inner drive that fuels greatness.
Clark may have been born in 2002, long after the original campaign hit television screens, but it doesn't diminish what it means to her to be part of the new campaign.
"It was a dream come true to partner with Gatorade," Clark, the No. 1 WNBA Draft pick, said in a statement. "And now to be part of their iconic ‘Is It In You?’ campaign is surreal to me. It’s a great reminder that anything can happen if you dream big and tap into your own unique IT."
Clark is featured alongside other modern-day sports superstars, including Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum, two-time Olympic hurdling champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the Las Vegas Aces' A’ja Wilson and Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, who was Gatorade’s 2023-2024 National Football Player of the Year.
The modern-day debut campaign called “IT Hasn’t Changed," is a reminder to "athletes everywhere that it’s not about hype, clout, clicks or likes — it’s inner drive that fuels greatness," Gatorade says.
Manufactured by PepsiCo and sold in more than 80 countries, Gatorade boasts 46% of the worldwide sports drink market, according to Euromonitor International
Its summer-long campaign will include "a colored sweat takeover on social media from Gatorade’s athlete roster, custom filters on Snapchat and Instagram for consumers to recreate the iconic colored sweat images and billboards in cities across the country," the company said.
While Clark's WNBA salary is expected to be $338,056 over four years with the Fever, according to Spotrac, she is commanding plenty of sponsorships and marketing deals. Her largest reported so far is an 8-year, $28 million contract with Nike that includes a signature shoe.
