Byrnes High School athletic director Tony Gillespie has been reassigned within the district as a "math interventionist," and will no longer serve as the school's athletic director according to Spartanburg School District Five's spokesperson.

The district declined to comment at this time as to why the change was made, but according to a job posting on their website they began accepting applications for the position on March 23.

A spokesperson from District Five said the reassignment was effective immediately. Gillespie was reached by phone Tuesday afternoon but declined to comment on the reassignment.

The district said that Gillespie will remain on staff next academic year as well and he has been offered a job, in the same position he was reassigned to, for the next academic year.

Byrnes football coach Reggie Shaw, who is the assistant athletic director, has been named the interim athletic director. Shaw declined to comment on the situation when reached by phone on Wednesday afternoon.

Gillespie was named athletic director in 2013, following Bobby Bentley who left the post to take over as the head coach of the Rebels football team. Gillespie has an extensive background in math within the district, serving as a teacher for 13 years.

A FOIA request involving Gillespie's personnel file and reassignment has been filed.

Gillespie has also served as the head coach of Byrnes’ freshman football team and won 50 straight games over two stints. He also called the offensive plays during the Rebels’ state championship season in 2008.
