Austrian far-right leader Herbert Kickl said Wednesday that his talks on forming a coalition government with a conservative party have collapsed. Austria’s president gave Kickl a mandate to try to form a new government on Jan. 6 after efforts to put together a governing alliance with his Freedom Party failed. On Wednesday, Kickl informed President Alexander Van der Bellen that he was giving up the mandate to form what would have been the first national government headed by the far right since World War II.

U.S. consumer prices increased more than expected in January, reinforcing the Federal Reserve's message that it was in no rush to resume cutting interest rates amid growing uncertainty over the economy. The consumer price index jumped 0.5% last month after gaining 0.4% in December, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said on Wednesday. In the 12 months through January, the CPI increased 3.0% after advancing 2.9% in December.
