In Spain's Canaries, rescuers exhausted as new migrant routes open
El Hierro, a small island in the Atlantic Ocean, is Europe's latest frontline in the struggle to cut irregular migration. Nearly twice as many migrants as residents have landed this year on the southernmost of Spain's Canary Islands. Kenya's government has said it was investigating how a prominent Ugandan opposition leader was spirited out of Nairobi this week, amid growing criticism that it had failed to protect foreign dissidents on its soil. Uganda's government spokesperson said on Wednesday it did not carry out abductions and that arrests abroad were done in collaboration with host countries. However in a television interview on Wednesday evening, Korir Sing'oei, principal secretary at Kenya's foreign ministry, said Besigye's detention - which he referred to as an abduction - was "not the act of the Kenyan government".

Dozens of people were killed or unaccounted for after Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip, a hospital director and the civil defence agency said Thursday.One strike on a residential area near the Kamal Adwan hospital in the territory left "dozens of people" dead or missing, the facility's director Hossam Abu Safiya told AFP. The process of retrieving the bodies and wounded continues, he said, adding: "Bodies arrive at the hospital in pieces."
