Boys Weightlifting: 65 lifters head to Lakeland for State, Pace leads area with 14 qualifiers

Following district and regional meets, the first state medals of the spring high school athletic season will be awarded this weekend.

Boys weightlifting takes center stage as the FHSAA State Championship begin Friday from the R.P. Funding Center in Lakeland.

There will be plenty of local competitors in the Central Florida to take part in the event as 65 area lifters earning spots. Leading the local contingent is Pace with 14 qualifiers, led by a trio of regional champions.

Last week for the Patriots, Shawn Morgan captured the regional title in Olympic competition at the 119-pound weight class while Kendall Ballou (129) did the same in traditional lifting. Meanwhile, Jayson Alford (199) enters state having swept both Olympic and traditional action at regionals.

Claiming runner-up finishes at the Region 1-3A meet, Navarre is second on the list with 13 qualifiers.

Overall, there are six lifters coming off regional-title efforts. Joining the Pace trio are Navarre's Alex Minisall (154 - Olympic/traditional) and Bryce Eberhardt (183 - Olympic/traditional) along with Northview's Dustin Santinelli (119 - traditional).
